About Minnetonka
Minnetonka is a suburban city and lies west of Minneapolis, MN in Hennepin County. After Fort Snelling was built in 1822, a group of explorers made their way up Minnehaha Creek and began exploring the land. The local Native Americans, the Dakota tribe, sold the land to the United States in 1854 with the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux.
Various saw mills, flour mills, and gist mills opened and closed over the next 50 years. Eventually, the surrounding villages began to grow and transportation became readily available thanks to the railroad. As a result, nearby villages began to grow larger in size with immigrants and began to annex land from Minnetonka. In the 1956, in an effort to preserve the remaining land, the residents voted to establish Minnetonka Village. The village only lasted 12 years, however, as the demands of managing such a quickly developing community became too great. In 1969, a city charter was established to serve the 35,000 residents.
